A sewer problem under the street isn't automatically the city's repair bill. The pipe connecting your home to the public main may still be your responsibility beyond the property line.
Find out which authority serves your address and where the reported problem is before agreeing to the work.
Reno says it maintains the public sewer mains. The lateral connecting a home or business to the main is private and the property owner's responsibility.
Sparks' published sanitary lateral detail, S-212B, assigns the owner operation, maintenance and repair responsibility for the lateral within the public right of way. Ask Sparks Engineering to confirm the applicable requirements and boundary for your address.
These are city specific sources. Don't apply them to another sewer system or assume your water provider operates the sewer. Shared connections and properties outside city service areas need their own confirmation.
If a camera inspection is proposed, ask which part of the pipe will be inspected and whether you receive the recording and explanation. Get the reported defect tied to a location, including anything the contractor couldn't inspect.
Clearing a blockage and finding a pipe defect are different services. Ask what each visit has actually established.
A spot repair addresses a specified section. Lining rehabilitates an existing pipe using a lining system. Replacement installs new pipe along the agreed route. The contractor needs to explain which methods fit the condition found.
Ask where the proposed work starts and ends, why that extent is recommended and what pipe remains. “Trenchless” doesn't tell you whether any excavation, connection work or surface repair is still required.
Include access pits or trenches, pipe work, connections, disposal, completion checks and restoring affected surfaces. For sidewalk or street work, identify who handles the approvals, traffic arrangements and coordination with the sewer authority.
Confirm those requirements with the city or authority responsible for the location. A plumbing quote doesn't itself grant permission to work in the street.
If different companies handle excavation, plumbing and restoration, use the multiple contractor guide to check that every part has someone responsible for it.
