What should a plumber's quote include?

A plumbing quote should tell you what's being done, what you're getting, what it costs and what you're still responsible for. It doesn't need a separate price for every fitting. It does need enough detail that you and the plumber are agreeing to the same job.

What are they doing, and where?

“Replace water heater” is a start. The next questions are which heater, whether it stays in the same location, what connections change and whether the old one gets hauled away.

For a repair, look for the problem being addressed and the work included. If the plumber hasn't found the cause yet, the offer should explain what investigation you're paying for and how a repair will be priced afterward.

Which equipment is included?

For new equipment, get the brand, model and capacity. That lets you check what another shop is offering and read the manufacturer's warranty.

A flat job price is fine. You can still ask what the number covers without asking the company to disclose its costs or profit.

What isn't included?

Look for removal, permits and repairs to walls, ceilings or cabinets opened during the work. If the plumber repairs the pipe but doesn't patch and paint the wall, you need to know that before work starts.

Ask about anything the shop can't price yet. What could change the bill? How would the added work be explained and approved?

Who handles the permit and warranty?

For permitted work, name who obtains the permit and arranges the inspection, and whether the fee is included. Our local permit guide explains where to check requirements.

Read equipment and labor warranties separately. “Warranty included” doesn't tell you who pays for a return visit, replacement part or labor.

Before you sign

Check the contractor's Nevada license number and monetary limit. Nevada requires both on bids and residential construction contracts. Use the license lookup guide if you're unfamiliar with those fields.

For work covered by NRS 624.970, the written agreement also needs the required work description, price, payment terms, estimated completion date and other notices. Repair only contracts have exceptions for plans and materials or equipment lists.

Our after you accept guide explains those requirements and the deposit rule. Read the acceptance terms before approving a quote, since approval may be the step that commits you to the agreement.
