A higher water bill or a spreading stain is a reason to investigate. It doesn't tell you where a pipe is leaking, or even confirm that a plumbing pipe is the source.
Leak detection is the work of narrowing that down. Before booking, find out what the investigation covers and whether repairing anything is included.

For a bill increase, check the billing period and known changes in water use. Tell the plumber about irrigation and other equipment that uses water.
TMWA explains that meter activity when water isn't knowingly being used can indicate a hidden leak. That activity doesn't locate it. Use the utility's guidance rather than operating unfamiliar meter equipment yourself.
For a stain, note when it appeared, whether it changes and what plumbing or recent work is nearby. A photo helps show the affected area, but the visible stain may be away from the source.
Ask which area or system the contractor will investigate, what access is needed and what you receive afterward. If the source can't be confirmed, what would the next step cost?
Thermal imaging is one tool a professional may use. It shows temperature patterns, not water through a wall. A suspected moisture pattern still needs confirmation. The contractor should explain how the tools and tests support the reported location.
You don't need to choose the tool yourself. You need to understand what the company found and how certain it is.
Detection, access, pipe repair and restoring the wall can be separate jobs. Check each one.
Fictional example: A company offers to locate a suspected supply leak and report its position. The price excludes opening the wall and fixing the pipe. That's a detection service, even though the homeowner's eventual goal is a repaired leak.
Before authorizing openings, ask who will patch, texture or paint afterward and whether that work is priced.
If a broader replacement is recommended, ask why that amount of pipe needs replacing. The repair or repipe guide helps compare those offers. For active flooding or immediate danger, seek urgent help before continuing to gather information.
