Frozen pipes in Reno: prevention and getting help

The temperature outside is only part of a pipe's exposure. Plumbing in an unheated garage, crawlspace or exterior wall can need attention before freezing weather arrives.

The American Red Cross recommends protecting exposed plumbing, maintaining heat and keeping garage doors closed where water lines run. Its guidance also describes allowing warmer room air around cabinet plumbing while keeping chemicals away from children.

Plan around the plumbing you have

Use the Red Cross and your water provider's guidance to identify vulnerable areas. For a longer term improvement, have a professional explain the insulation, routing or other protection suited to the location.

Heat cable and related electrical work need their own assessment. Don't treat a product name as an installation plan.

Know where to find the official shutoff instructions for your home before you need them. TMWA distinguishes the house side valve from the valve in the street meter box.

If the water slows or stops

Tell the plumber which fixtures are affected, when the change began and whether you see leaking or a newly wet surface. Freezing conditions are relevant, but they don't rule out another supply problem.

Don't use an open flame or enter an unsafe space trying to find or thaw a pipe. The Red Cross advises contacting a licensed plumber when the frozen area can't be found or reached. This guide doesn't provide a thawing procedure.

If water is spreading, a ceiling is damaged or water is near electrical equipment, describe that when seeking urgent help. Move away and call emergency services for immediate danger.

After flow returns

Ask the plumber what they found about the affected pipe and whether more investigation is needed. Water coming out of the tap again doesn't inspect the plumbing hidden behind a wall.

Keep two questions separate: what needs repairing now, and what could better protect the area from cold exposure? A repaired section doesn't necessarily include insulation or another prevention improvement.

For either job, check where access is needed, who repairs the opened surfaces and what permits apply. Our emergency guide links the official local utility resources; the quote guide helps with the work proposed afterward.
